TAHOE VISITORS EMERGENCY ALERT
Over 17 lakes and reservoirs in California and Nevada are already infested with Quagga and Zebra mussels. The damage is in the billions of dollars. Clogged water intake pipes. Boat engines ruined. Beaches made unusable by razor sharp shells and a horrible stench. Irreversible damage to native species and habitat.
Don't let Tahoe be next.
The risk is extreme. Sierra Clubbers and other friends of Tahoe need to help lead the way.
FOR MAXIMUM PROTECTION: DO NOT BRING YOUR POWER BOATS, (OR KAYAKS, INFLATABLES, TUBES, WET SUITS, EVEN WATER SHOES, ETC.) TO TAHOE IF THEY HAVE BEEN IN ANY OTHER BODY OF WATER.
The stakes are too high. Once the mussels get into a lake, there is no known way to get rid of them.
Please either:
1) dedicate your water craft and accessories exclusively to Tahoe ("Whatever you put in Tahoe stays in Tahoe.") or
2) leave your water craft and accessories at home and take the gas money you'll save by not hauling a trailer up here to help pay for renting your equipment when you get to Tahoe.
AT A MINIMUM:
COMPLETELY WASH ALL WATER CRAFT AND ACCESSORIES AND DRY THEM OUT FOR
AT LEAST 30 DAYS AFTER BEING IN ANOTHER BODY OF WATER. FLUSH OUT
ENGINES WITH 140 DEGREE WATER. AND USE A CHLORINE SOLUTION IN BILGES
AND STORAGE COMPARTMENTS TO MAKE SURE ALL LARVAE ARE KILLED.
(Quagga mussels can live up to 30 days on dry surfaces and
indefinitely in standing water where they reproduce.)
We dodged a bullet last summer. The agricultural inspection station at Truckee found quagga mussels on 4 boats. At least one of those boats was headed for Tahoe.
SPREAD THE WORD, NOT THE MUSSELS!!! We have a lake to save. And a way of life.
Thanks.
