Wednesday Evening Fun, Fitness and Discovery Hikes
June-August Wednesday "Fun and Fitness" Evening Hikes
Meet 6 pm ML Union Bank parking lot. Join us each Wednesday evening to get fit and stay fit for summer fun. Explore local trails and learn about our natural surroundings, geology, wildflowers, and trees. All hikes are moderate to easy, completed by dark. Bring water, layered clothes, sturdy shoes. June 15 (Sunday) Mammoth Lakes Basin
Join us for an easy hike, 3-4 mi to learn about early summer in the Lakes Basin and possibly see some wildflowers and wildlife. We will be back not later then 2 pm. Bring water, lunch, hiking boots, mosquito repellent, hat, sunscreen, etc. Meet 10 am at ML Union Bank parking lot. June 22 (Sunday) Barney Lakes Adventure Hike
See 10 beautiful lakes in our Mammoth Lakes Basin. We will hike the Duck Lake Trail to Barney Lakes then return seeing Red Lake, two Wood Lakes, the remote Clark and Louis Lakes, plus others along the way. Learn some mining history of the area. Moderate to strenuous 8 mi, 1200 ft elev. gain, most on trail with one-quarter cross-country. Bring lots of water, lunch, hat, sunscreen, insect repellant, hiking boots, camera and optional hiking sticks. Meet 8 am at ML Union Bank parking lot. June 29 (Sunday) Hall Natural Area Reserve from Tioga Lake
Hike into the spectacular Hall Natural area where overnight camping is not permitted and learn about some of the plant studies, geology and mining history. See Bennettville mine and numerous lakes nestled against the mountain range bordering Yosemite. With luck we might see a family of ptarmigans. Bring lunch, plenty of water, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, hiking boots, and camera. Meet 8 am at ML Union Bank parking lot or 8:45 am at the Lee Vining Ranger Station on Hwy 120. July 6 (Sunday) NO HIKE
July 13 (Sunday) Young Lakes in Yosemite
Starting at the Dog Lake parking area, Lambert Dome, and we will go counterclockwise along a tree-lined trail to the Lakes. This is a 14 1/2 mile round-trip loop hike to the Lakes. It is rated strenuous because of the length. Doing the loop without taking a branch to the Lakes shortens the hike to approximately 8.6 miles and makes it moderate. On the return we will pass Soda Springs and follow the Toulumne River back to the trailhead. There will be spectacular views in all directions. Bring your Yosemite Park pass; otherwise the fee per vehicle will be $20. We will leave the Mammoth Lakes Union Bank parking lot at 8 am or meet at the trailhead at 9:15 am. The hike is limited to 15 and no dogs are allowed on part trails. Bring snacks, lunch, plenty of water, bug spray and sunscreen. Leaders: EL and Pat Smoogin (760-934-0359). No Dogs.
July 20 (Sunday) Starkweather Lake from Minaret Overlook (bus back)
Wildflower Hike from Minaret Overlook to Starkweather Lake. See and learn about large variety of wildflowers and an old mine site while descending 3.5 miles through an old Red Fir Forest. Observe the results of avalanches on the forest. Ride bus back to Overlook or to other points of interest along the San Joaquin River for a fee of $7. Meet 9 am at Minaret Overlook. July 25-26 (Friday - Saturday), Tuolumne Meadow Restoration Work
Join us to work in beautiful Tuolumne Meadow restoring damaged areas. Optional: Stay over Sunday for a delightful time in Yosemite. We may camp in or near Tuolumne Meadow or we could commute. More info and to sign up: Wilma Wheeler (760 934-3764, wilma.bryce@verizon.net). No Dogs.
July 27 (Sunday), Lake Gibbs and Kidney Lake
Hike to Lake Gibbs in Ansel Adams Wilderness, 6 mi round trip, 1530 ft elevation gain on good trail. Learn about potential new wilderness. A possible extended hike will be considered to Kidney Lake, an additional 2 mi round trip and 850 ft gain. Bring lunch, plenty of water, hat, sunscreen, hiking boots, etc. Meet 8 am at Union Bank parking lot or at junction of Hwys 395 and 120 East (grave site) at 8:45 am. Aug 3 (Sunday), Blue Lake from Lake Sabrina
Hike from Sabrina trailhead to beautiful Blue Lake 6.2 mi RT on a moderately difficult trail. The hike can be extended an additional 3 miles for those wanting to see Dingleberry Lake. Bring snacks, lunch, plenty of water, bug spray, sunscreen and optional hiking sticks. Meet at the Mammoth Lakes Union Bank parking lot at 8 am or 9 am at Cerro Coso Bishop Campus parking lot on West Line St.--easy access from Ed Powers Road. Leader: Cindy Ostrowski (760-387-2192).
