Donations For Outings -Thanks for All Your Contributions!

The Great Basin Group's Outing Leaders are collecting $1 donations from all members on outings ($2 for non-members). These contributions will greatly help to enhance our Outings Program by providing leaders with more training opportunities, provide new first aid kits to all leaders, and help offset the cost of our bi-monthly Outings Meetings. Any extra funds may be used to help finance the cost of our Program Meetings at Bartley Ranch.
Our Outings Leaders provide a variety of outings in our effort to meet the needs our membership. They are all volunteers who endeavor to share their love and knowledge of the outdoors in the amazing country around us. Your donations will provide essential support to the Great Basin Group's Outing Program and will be greatly appreciated.

 

April 3 (Tuesday)
Tuesday Night Slow- Paced Conditioning Hikes
– every Tuesday night. We will hike about 2 hours covering 3-4 miles, with minimal to moderate elevation gain in the parks & foothills of the Reno-Sparks area. April 4 (Wednesday)
Donner Summit Snowshoe Hike (Tahoe Group).
Donner Summit north and west, maybe to Peter Grubb Hut, Slow to moderate pace, some elevation gain, about 5 miles, Leader: Gwen Rosser (530-546-7548, grosser@aaahawk.com ). Moderate.

April 5 (Thursday)
Evening Conditioning Hike.
We will hike 3-4 mi. near Reno at a moderate pace. Learn about early spring flora on the high desert. Call for details. Leaders: David Von Seggern (303-8461), Gracie Caudill (626-7873). DL. Moderately easy.

April 7 (Saturday)
Westside of Peavine Range.
About 1200 feet climb from north side through aspen groves to overlook into the Sierras located north of Tahoe. Learn about local plant life. 7 to 8 miles round trip. If snowshoes are needed we will travel a longer gentle incline. Trip limit. DOK. Leader: Gary Hanneman (425-3742). Moderate.

April 7 (Saturday)
Carson River Railroads near Mound House Day Hike.
Hike 12 miles with 1000 feet elevation gain in the scenic Carson River Canyon near Moundhouse. We will follow portions of the route of an old narrow gauge line plus the V& T. Learn about the railroads of the Comstock era. Some cross-country. Vehicle shuttle necessary. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Moderate.

April 7 (Saturday)
Klondyke Meadows Cross Country Ski (Tahoe Group).
This will be a high beginner XC ski near Martis peak. We will ski on fairly flat terrain to a nice lunch spot. From there we can practice our turns on some small hills. Also we will learn about winter survival. Leader: Glenn Polochko (530-587-5906, gpolochko@yahoo.com). High beginner.

April 8 (Sunday)
Hunter Falls Dayhike.
Enjoy a great wilderness dayhike beginning within Reno city limits.View 30 ft. Hunter Falls and learn about local flora and fauna. Experienced hikers only, please. Camera a good idea. DOK. 7 mi. rt, 1000' gain. Leaders: Peter Faber (786-0489), Gary Hanneman (425-3742). Moderate.

April 9 (Monday)  
ExCom Meeting.
All members are welcome to join us at our monthly ExCom meeting. Board members discuss local environmental issues and present reports. For information: Holly Coughlin (331-7488).

April 12 (Thursday)
GB Group general meeting.
Environmentally sound energy efficiency for your home:  What you can do, now and in the future. Mary Winston will show some slides and talk about home energy audits for people living in drafty apartments to those living in mega-mansions at Incline. Russ Cartwright, from IPC-Solar, will then follow on with specifics about residential solar applications which cover the spectrum from self-contained solar air heating units and solar hot water heating to full-blown photovoltaic electricity generation and much more. April 14-15 (Saturday-Sunday)
Greater Gerlach Hot Spring Car Camp.
See a local art gallery, visit the site of the on-hold Sempra Power Plant, pub crawl through Gerlach. Possible access to private Great Boiling Spring & Fly Geyser. Possible dinner in Gerlach. Joint trip with Friends of Black Rock. Primitive camping at Trego Hot Springs Sat. night. Bad weather cancels.  Trip Limit 25. DL. Leader: David Book (843-6443). Easy.

April 14-15 (Saturday-Sunday)
Backcountry Snow camp Ski/Snowshoe Rock Creek
(Tahoe Group). Pack into Chicken Foot Lake and explore the area. Call the leader for meeting time/place and equipment list. Learn about the local geography. April 15 (Sunday)
Buckland Station
, HIKE CANCELLED on the lower Carson River near Silver Springs/Alt 95 Day Hike. From Historic Buckland Station, hike downstream along the lower Carson River enjoying the riparian habitat. Return on segment of Pony Express Trail route. Learn some history of the area. Option to tour Fort Churchill on your own after hike. 8 miles under 100 feet elevation. Hiking in soft sand. ND. Donner Summit Snowshoe/Hike
(Tahoe Group). Donner Summit south to the lakes and loop back through Boreal Ridge. Great views, about 4 miles, some elevation gain, slow to moderate pace for a great day in the snow. Leader: Gwen Rosser (530-546-7548, grosser@aaahawk.com ). Moderate.

April 19 (Thursday)
Conditioning hike for All.
Moderately paced walk along the Truckee River. Meet at 5:30 to walk approximately 2 to 3 miles at Cottonwood Park in Sparks. Learn about nesting Red-tail hawks. Depart at 5:45. From McCarran go East on Greg Street turn right on Spice Island Drive and follow road around to park. Bring water and comfortable shoes. No need to call. DL. Bad weather cancels. April 21 (Saturday)
Dogskin Mountain Dayhike.
Conservation minded trip to hike the peaks of Dogskin Mountain overlooking the ill-fated Winnemucca Ranch and Warm Springs Valley. Find out what we might be losing before Reno annexes as a satellite area. Learn about spectacular scenery and natural resources. Panoramic views of the surrounding moutains and valleys. April 22 (Sunday)
Virginia & Truckee Rail Road Day Hike.
Hike a portion of the scenic V & T right of way before tracks are re-laid. Learn about the history of the area. View some current and past mining operations. 10 miles downhill. Vehicle shuttle will be necessary. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935) Moderate.

April 22 (Sunday)
Earth Day Riverwalk.
Join us on a walk along the Truckee River in the morning before most of the Earth Day celebrations get into full-swing. We will meet at Idewild Park and walk west along the river discussing some of the flora and fauna that we encounter. DOK on leash on the walk, but dogs are not allowed at the celebration in the park.

April 22 (Sunday)
Earth Day Festival.
What a great day to learn about many local anregional environmental issues, listen to a variety of music, and visit the many booths with all kinds of earth-friendly products. Be sure to drop by Sierra Club's Great Basin Group and check out our wide array of outdoor guides and books for sale. Festival begins around 11:00 AM near the California Building at Idewild Park in Reno. If you are a member and would like to help at our booth please contact Holly (331-7488).

April 23 (Monday)
Outings Meeting.
Join us as we plan summer outings for June and July. All members welcome. We are always looking for new co-leaders and leaders for trips in our area. Information on leading hikes provided. April 29th (Sunday)
Churchill Butte
, near Silver Springs Day Hike. Scale Churchill Butte, overlooking historic Ft Churchill, emigrant wagon train routes, portions of ancient and modern Lake Lahontan, the Lincoln Highway, and the Pony Express trail. Learn a bit of history of this area. 9 miles with 2,700 elevation gain for the day. Portions off trail with steep ascent and descent. ND. Leader: T A Taro (775-530-2935). Moderate.
