Join the fun! The 100 Mile Summer is here!
Get an entry card from any one of our Outings Leaders to participate in the 100 Mile Summer.
All you have to do is fill in the date, outing title, and miles. As you participate on outings from June 1 - September 24 have your leader sign the card and count up your miles. Only official Sierra Club Outings are eligible, including all the conditioning hikes. On October 14, all members who completed 100 miles or more are encouraged to join us for a celebration in remembrance of our summer journeys. This is going to be a great party! In December, we will print the names of all the participants who hiked 100 miles or more in the Trails and on our Web site. So don't miss out, get your card and start counting up your miles.
 

August 1 (Tuesday)
Easy Paced Conditioning Hike
. Hike about 3-4 mi., mod. gain of less than 1,000 ft., for two hours after work. Hike in foothills and parks around Truckee Meadows. Discuss flora and fauna of the area. DOK on leash. August 2 (Wednesday)
Fast Paced Conditioning Hike.
Hike about 4-5 mi., possible 1,000 + gain for two hours after work somewhere in the hills surrounding the Truckee Meadows. Learn about the flora, fauna, or history of the area. Bring water, trail shoes, and windbreaker. Call for recorded message with details for directions, starting the Monday before the hike. DOK. Leader: Holly Coughlin (331-7488). Moderate.

August 5 (Saturday)
Emigrant Lake Dayhike.
Hike from Caples Lake, Carson Pass area, to Emigrant Lake. Learn about fish, birds, and mosquitoes. Interesting waterfall on the way in, and cold swimming opportunities. Apx. 8 mi., 1,000 ft. elevation gain. DL. Leaders: Gary Hanneman (746-0771 or 336-7698), Craig Mastos (786-7742). Moderate.

August 5 (Saturday)
Thomas Creek Trail for Families.
Join us on the outing geared for families or people who want a stroll. You will learn about a great place to take an easy outing and some of the flora or fauna in this habitat. Apx. 2-3 mi., and less than 300 ft. gain. Leaders: Laura Brigham (786-7497), Shane Murray (691-2335). Easy.

August 5-6 (Sat-Sun)
Backpack Round Lake.
Pack into Round Lake then explore the other lakes in the area or hang out. Bring a specialty food item to share at the evening happy hour. Call the leader for meeting time/place and equipment list. August 6 (Sunday)
Mt. Lincoln Wildflower hike.
This will be a moderately paced hike to the Mt. Lincoln area on Donner summit. Beautiful scenery and learn about flowers in the area at 8000’. 1500’ elevation gain and 8 miles total. DOK with leader approval. Leader: Sally Lyon (530-582-4943, sally@mytahoevacation.com). Moderate. 

August 6 (Sunday)
Tri-Lake Ramble.
This is one of my favorite dayhikes that winds by three beautiful mountain lakes and one fall. Learn about the mining history, flora and fauna in this undisclosed destination. It is a treat. However, hikers must be conditioned and ready for a steady hike...that's how I move. Apx. 8 mi., and 1,300 ft. gain. DOK. Trip limit 14. Leader: Holly Coughlin (331-7488). Moderate.

August 10 (Thursday)
Condition Your Mind and Body.
Condition your mind with a beginning Map and Compass Class and your body with an easy, local conditioning hike. Together with the practical experience with your new map and compass skills, all in the cool of the evening. Also, learn about the flora and fauna in the area, too!  Possible pizza afterward. DOK. August 11-13 (Friday-Sunday)
Dana Plateau-Tioga Pass Area Camp and Hike.
From near Tioga Pass, ascend Glacier Canyon Trail for 2.5 mi. to Dana Lake and then another 1.5 mi. to the Dana Plateau for a 2,000 ft. gain. Camping in Tioga Pass area. Sunday, hike to the site of old Bennettville and to several lakes in the Hall Natural Area NW of Tioga Pass Resort. Learn about the wildflowers, glacial activity and great scenery. August 13 (Sunday)
Annual Member's Barbeque.
Join us for our Member's Barbeque in the Manzanita Group Picnic Area at Galena Park. This spot is near Galena Creek and has lots of trees. Also, a great volleyball court (that is level) and two horseshoe pits. The Great Basin Group will provide hamburgers, hot dogs, veggie-burgers, sodas, and all condiments. Please bring a side-dish to share and BYOB. Picnic will start at 11:00 AM. Take 395 S. to Mt. Rose Hwy. and go west. Drive 6.2 miles to the second entrance on the right for Galena Park. Galena Park Hike.
Work up an appetite on this moderately easy hike in Galena Park at 4 miles and 600 ft. gain. Learn about the local flora and fauna in this park. Bring plenty of water and trail shoes. Elephant's Back at Carson Pass.
Scale the Elephant's Back, visit Frog Pond, Winnemucca Lake and Round Top Lake with a possible return by Wood's Lake. Wild Flowers should be in full display. Learn about the history of the area and overlook portions of an emigrant train route. Storms cancel. Hike is apx. 7 mi., under 1,500 ft. gain. ND. Leader: T A Taro (530-2935). Moderate.

August 17-20 (Thursday-Sunday)
John Muir Trail Backpack.
Three days of backpacking in the John Muir Wilderness beginning at Rock Creek and ending up near Lake Mary above Mammoth. Experienced, well-conditioned backpackers only. Must be able to carry own food for three days and have all backpacking essentials. Learn about the geology and history of this famous trail. Must call by the 14th to confirm. Donations for drivers should be a minimum of $20. DL. Trip Limit 10. Leaders: Holly Coughlin (331-7488), Sherrie Williams (560-0339). Strenuous.

August 19 (Saturday)
Tahoe Rim Trail to Galena Waterfall.
Hike along the Tahoe Rim Trail to Galena Creek Waterfall at a spectacular 60 ft. This is an easy-paced hike and will be about 5 miles with less than 1,000 ft. elevation gain. We'll explore the Mt. Rose Meadows, as time permits. View and learn wildflowers of the area. DL. Leader: David Von Seggern (303-8461), Joy Bridgeman (746-1313), Moderately Easy.

Auguar 20 (Sunday)
Basin and Castle Peak Hike.
We will bag two peaks, see the best flower display in Tahoe and have a pot luck picnic at the end. A full day. Spectacular view of the Sierras and Carson Mt. ranges. 5 Lakes, 2 Snow Banks-Carson Pass.
Carson Pass area. Learn about the early history of the area. Enjoy wildflowers and scenery. Vehicle shuttle necessary. Bad weather will cancel. Hike is about 10 miles with 1,000 ft. gain. ND. Leader: T A Taro (530-2935). Moderate.

August 21 (Monday)
Great Basin Group Outings Meeting.
All leaders, co-leaders or others interested in outings are encouraged to attend our meeting to plan for October and November. Learn requirements for being an Outings Leader. Meet around 6:30 PM at Laura Brigham's home until the schedule is full. Opportunities to lead hikes, bike rides, or other ideas. Beverages provided. Please bring a dish to share. Hike East Truckee Area.
Hike in the mountains east of Truckee, from 6-ish until dark.3-5 miles, 500-700' elevation gain. Optional BBQ on Sally's back porch afterwards. Hiking boots, water, and windbreakers recommended. DOK. Leader: Sally Lyon (530-582-4943, sally@mytahoevacation.com). Moderate.

Meeks Bay to Lake Geneviere/Crag Lake.

Bat Walk along the Truckee River.
Come experience a phenomenon only a few have shared in Reno. The evening emergence of thousands of bats along the Truckee River. We will witness how they soar, glide, and swoop to catch all those nasty bugs (AKA mosquitoes). Great walk for older children. Dogs must be on leash. Walk is about 4 mi. and no elevation gain. Bring plenty of water. Leader: Holly Coughlin (331-7488). Easy.

August 26 (Saturday)
Mt. Rose Meadows Hike.
Join the Sierra Club for an easy stroll away from the city heat in the Mount Rose Meadows. We'll discuss the alpine vegetation in the area and also what we can do to protect the Meadows from Motorized Vehicles. We'll also learn the whistle code. BYO whistle. This will be about 2 miles and we'll enjoy lunch in a beautiful spot. DL. Leader: Grace Blaylock (677-9257). Easy.

August 26 (Saturday)
Silver Peak 10,722.
Near Ebbett’s Pass and about 14 miles/4,000 feet of gain. The hike is limited to 8. Bring the 10 essentials, 3 quarts water, lunch, and snacks. Very early start from Sacramento. August 26 (Saturday)
Red Lake Peak and Steven's Peak at Carson Pass.
Hike to the top or near top of two peaks each over 10,000 ft. elevation. Long portions of hike are off trail. Must have sturdy boots. Explorer John Fremont made the ascent of Red Lake Peak in 1844. Learn more about the history of the area. Trip is about 7 miles, but over 2,000 ft. gain. Storms cancel. ND. Leader: T A Taro (530-2935). Moderately strenuous.

August 27 (Sunday)
Lake Paddle South Lake Tahoe, Emerald Bay.
This is a Class I paddle near the town of South Lake Tahoe. We can skirt the shoreline and enter Emerald Bay. Must be able to paddle all day at a moderate pace. Fee for launch.
