APRIL 1 (SATURDAY)

APRIL 4 (TUESDAY)
Tuesday Night Slow-Paced Conditioning Hikes. We will be doing weekly Tuesday night, slow-paced conditioning hikes throughout the spring & summer, beginning April 4th. We will hike 3-4 miles, with minimal to moderate elevation gain, in the parks & foothills of the Reno-Sparks area. We will hike for approximately 2 hours & discuss flora & fauna of the area. DL. Wednesday Conditioning Hike. Join me on a moderately fast-paced hike in the hills surrounding the Truckee Meadows. Learn about flora, fauna, and maybe some historic details about our destination. Bring water, windbreaker, and trail shoes. DL. Leader: Ridge Walker (853-8055, edc@unr.edu).

APRIL 5 (WEDNESDAY)
Environmental Literature Meeting. We will meet at 7:30 PM to discuss a short book by John Daniel in this second gathering of the Environmental Literature Group (aka, Armchair Outings). Come to help shape the agenda for future meetings as we delve into interesting environmental literature, past and present. A great way to intimately experience other times and places. APRIL 8 (SATURDAY)
Dayhike & Class. Learn "hands on" map & compass on this easy dayhike to Rattlesnake Mountain in Southern Reno. Join the classroom in the parking lot and combine class with local examples from mountaintop. Beginners welcome! Feel free to bring your own compass & map. DL. Trip Limit 12. APRIL 8 (SATURDAY)
Louse Peak. Hike to the highest point in the northern half of the Virginia Range, Louse Peak (6,800'). 2,000' and 4.5 miles from the southeast Truckee Meadows across rolling grassland, sagebrush and pinyon country. Should be a lot of wild horses roaming in the highlands. Learn to identify rocks and trees. Moderate. DL. Leader: Ridge Walker (853-8055, edc@unr.edu)

APRIL 9 (SUNDAY)
Virginia Mountain Dayhike. A moderately fast-paced hike in the Virginia Mountains, southwest of Pyramid Lake. Learn about our efforts to protect the Virginias. You'll be amazed by the far-reaching views and interesting topography of this area. Hike will be appx. 8 miles with up to 2,000' elevation gain. Exact destination depends upon weather. APRIL 9 (SUNDAY)
Carson River Railroads near Mound House. Hike along the scenic Carson Canyon and learn about the railroads and Comstock era. Portions of the hike are cross-country. Apx. 12 miles, 1,000 ft. gain. Vehicle shuttle necessary with four-wheeled drive. Call in advance. ND. Leader: T A Taro (530-2935). Moderately strenuous.

Program Meeting. Dr. Glenn Miller, Professor of Environmental Studies at UNR, will be our featured guest this evening with a slide presentation of his travels in Siberia and, in particular, the spectacular (and threatened) Lake Baikal. Along with the stunning slide show Glenn will be discussing his collaborative work with the Tahoe Baikal Institute and their programs related to the environmental issues around Lake Baikal and Siberia. Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about one of the world's great treasures that has many similarities to Lake Tahoe...only much larger. Selenite Peak Dayhike. Bag Selenite Peak at the south terminus of the Black Rock Desert. This peak lies in a WSA near Gerlach. Hike will be roughly 6 miles RT and 2400' elevation gain. Conditioning Hike for All. Moderately paced walk along the Truckee River. Meet at 5:30 to walk appx. 2 to 3 miles at Cottonwood Park in Sparks. Depart at 5:45. From McCarran go East on Greg Street, turn right on Spice Island Drive and follow road around to park. Bring water and comfortable shoes. No need to call. Dogs Limited. Bad weather cancels. APRIL 21 (FRIDAY)
Great Basin Movie Night. In honor of John Muir's birthday I will be showing the highly acclaimed movie, Monumental: David Brower's fight for Wild America at my home. Monumental is the true story of how a 1930's rock climber became the greatest conservationist of the 20th century. "See it and just try not to get inspired." says Outside Magazine. APRIL 22 (SATURDAY)
Spanish Springs Peak. Moderate Day Hike / Peak Bag of Spanish Springs Peak (7406'). Expect lots of glorious wildflowers; and if we're lucky we'll see a few antelope and golden eagles. 5 miles / 1500' to the summit; half of it cross-country across volcanic terrain. APRIL 22 (SATURDAY)
McClellen Peak near Virginia City. Trace part of the route of the historic box flume which brought water from the Sierra to Virginia City. Learn some of the history of this area.  Views of Washoe Valley, Mound House, and Carson City. Hike is apx. 8 miles, 800 ft. gain. ND. Leader: T A Taro (530-2935). Moderate.

APRIL 23 (SUNDAY)
Earth Day Riverwalk. Join us on a moderately-paced walk along the Truckee River and return to Idlewild Park to enjoy all the Earth Day festivities. On our walk we'll take moments to discuss and learn about the flora and fauna we observe along the way. DOK with leashes only, but are not allowed at the festival. APRIL 23 (SUNDAY)
Earth Day Festival. Join the Sierra Club and many other environmental groups in celebrating Earth Day this year. Great entertainment, food and booths to check out. APRIL 24 (MONDAY)
Outings Meeting. All leaders, co-leaders or others interested in outings are encouraged to attend our meeting to plan for June - July. Meet 6:30 at Holly's home until schedule is full. APRIL 28-30 (FRI AFTERNOON, SAT & SUN)
Walker Lake Photo Trip. We will be photographing the mountains, desert and lake in the Walker Lake Hawthorne area. Learn digital and film landscape photography. APRIL 29 (SATURDAY)
Mt. Davidson Dayhike. This is one of my favorite desert hikes because of the fantastic views of the Sierras to the West and expansive views of desert to the East. Learn about and observe flora and fauna including wild horses. This trip requires a shuttle into Virginia City and has an extremely steep descent, so good knees are a must. Hike is appx. 8 miles with 1,000' gain, but 2,000' steep loss. DL with leashes. Call for details by Thursday. Trip limit 14. Leader: Holly Coughlin (331-7488).
