Managing Growth in the Truckee Meadows

The only truly urban area in Northern Nevada is the Truckee Meadows, made up of the Cities of Sparks and Reno, and the urbanized portions of unincorporated Washoe County. Explosive growth is forecast in this region, drained by Steamboat Creek and the Truckee River. This photo shows the destruction of about one half of the remaining South Meadows, going on right now in preparation for the anticipated growth.

Many Nevadans don’t want to face the fact that their beloved wide-open spaces are gone for good in the Truckee Meadows. The lands between the urban areas and the remaining open space ringing the valley are being developed so quickly that local residents lose access before they know it. In May, 2002, these wild horses were grazing in sight of Reno, but in a few years, you or your kids may not be able to visit them.

Learning about the forces at work in our region can be a fascinating, mysterious, and frustrating adventure. You will find so many players and agendas working together and at cross purposes. Our best hope is that people like you will step forward and help forge a new sense of regionalism that will enable us to meet the challenges of the future.

The photo at the right shows Peavine Mountain the distance, with the northernmost Truckee Meadows in the foreground. This area is owned by the University, hence its popular name, University Farms. Steamboat Creek flows left to right at the base of the hill. The Truckee River flows across the middle of photo, its banks marked by the trees.
