The Virginia Mountains |

Only 30 miles from the Reno-Sparks metropolis lie the beautiful Virginia Mountains. As one travels north toward Pyramid Lake, the spectacular color of Incandescent Rocks appears in the foreground with the majestic 8700 foot Tule Peak in the background. Several good dirt roads give access to this area where recreation, including hiking, walking, rock-climbing, and photography, is special during all seasons of the year. Almost 25,000 acres of roadless land offer a wild experience to the explorer. A visitor may see antelope, raptors soaring, or lizards sunning themselves on the rocks. The area is filled with both historic and cultural sites, offering visions of earlier times and people. Because this area is so close to a growing population, some people treat the land with indifference, driving across fragile slopes and dumping waste in its canyons. The Virginia Mountains need a special protective designation to ensure that the area will be as much a recreational and wild treasure for our children tomorrow as it is for us today.
